Deferred Gifts

Settlement Music School is especially grateful to the growing number of friends who ensure that their tradition of support continues well into the future by providing for the School through their estate plans.

If you have remembered Settlement with such a gift or if you are interested in doing so, please let us know. We would be pleased to welcome you as a member of the School's Cadenza Society.

The Cadenza Society was established to thank and recognize those generous individuals who have remembered Settlement Music School in their estate plans through their Wills or other Planned Gifts. You can ensure that your tradition of support continues in the future by providing for the School through a Bequest, a Charitable Annuity, or a gift of Life Insurance. Your participation will set an important example for others, and awareness of your intentions will help us in our long range planning.

Opportunity for Tax-Advantaged Gifts

The “Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010” that was just signed into law December 17, 2010 allows a person 70 ½ or older to make a gift to Settlement Music School directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), effective immediately.

The law allows gifts to Settlement to be excluded from gross income for otherwise taxable IRA distributions, up to $100,000 per year, only from traditional and Roth IRAs. If a husband and wife are both over the age of 70 ½ and each own their own IRA, collectively, the couple may make a qualified gift totaling $200,000 per year.

The bill provides that if taxpayers elect to do so, they may treat charitable distributions made after 2010 but on or before January 31, 2011 as distributions made in 2010.

While the distribution to Settlement does not result in an income tax charitable deduction, it does reduce overall taxable income from IRA distributions for that year by the amount directed to Settlement which is, in effect, a 100% charitable deduction. If you qualify, please consider using these funds to support Settlement’s programs that benefit thousands of students each year.

Since each individual's tax situation is different, you should consult with a professional advisor before making a charitable IRA distribution to Settlement Music School.
